Pirates make the wrong kind of history in blowout loss

We already know that Pittsburgh Pirates starter Jordan Lyles did not have it Wednesday evening against the St. Louis Cardinals. We also know that St. Louis made history in its own right during a nine-run second inning.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, the rest of the evening at PNC Park did not go any better. In fact, position players Jose Osuna and Jacob Stallings took to the mound to close out the final three innings of the 14-8 blowout loss.

It’s the first time since 1908 that two Pirates position players have pitched in the same game.

Where talking 111 years of Pirates baseball. That’s literally tens of thousands of games without this happening.

An even more interesting side note is that the 1908 Pirates were headed by all-time great Honus Wagner and it represented one year before their first ever World Series title.

Wagner did not pitch that season. Though, the Hall of Famer did make a relief appearance in both 1900 and 1902 for Pittsburgh. The more you know.
