Just when it seemed like Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer was on the verge of a return, he’ll now be sidelined for an additional start following a new diagnosis for his back injury.
According to The Washington Post’s Jesse Dougherty, Scherzer received a cortisone shot on Tuesday following the discovery of inflammation in the bursa under his shoulder blade.
The injury, referred to as Scapulothoracic bursitis, is inflammation typically caused by strenuous overuse and typically occurs in athletes. Fortunately, the cortisone shot is expected to take care of the issues.
Scherzer expects to feel ready to resume throwing in a few days then he could progress to throwing a bullpen session. If he takes the next steps without any renewed discomfort, he could rejoin Washington’s rotation in the very near future.
Whenever he returns, it will be welcomed by the Nationals. The 34-year-old is once again the favorite to win the NL’s Cy Young award thanks to his 2.30 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 181 strikeouts across 129.1 innings.
