With their 7-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, the New York Yankees won their eighth consecutive straight series.
While the Yankees have enjoyed a great deal of success over the last 21 years, eight straight series wins is something they haven’t experienced since 1998.
We’re guessing that New York and its fans won’t mind seeing this comparison. The Yankees won the World Series in 1998, the first of what would be three straight. They also posted one of the best records in MLB history, going 114-48.
Since then, New York has won three World Series (1999, 2000, 2009), had five 100-plus win seasons (2002-2004, 2009, 2018), and finished with a winning record each year, a streak that actually began in 1993. So, the Yankees haven’t been slouches by any means.
Still, until Wednesday, winning eight series in a row remained elusive.
New York now turns its attention to the rival Boston Red Sox, who the Yankees are hosting in a four-game series. So, if they’re going to match the nine consecutive series win mark achieved by the 1998 team, they’ll have their hands full.
