MLB lost a giant on Memorial Day, as former Boston Red Sox star Bill Buckner passed away early on Monday morning after battling Lewy Body Dementia.

ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap shared the sad news after speaking with Buckner’s wife, Jody, on the phone.

Before Schaap’s confirmation, former Mets manager Bobby Valentine foreshadowed the news with a heartbreaking message on Twitter, followed by a picture with his friend.

As news of Buckner’s passing circulated, the MLB community as a whole mourned the loss of a legendary figure.

A man who went down in infamy for his legendary error in the 1986 World Series, Buckner was so much more than that one mistake. He had an incredible career that spanned 22 seasons, won the batting title in 1980 and made the 1981 All-Star team. He was also a first-class human being who will be missed by many.

Rest in peace, Bill Buckner.
