Joe Flacco has zero interest in mentoring Drew Lock

Ravens quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Lamar Jackson

Drew Lock has a chance to develop into the long-term franchise passer the Denver Broncos have been looking for, but Joe Flacco has no interest in mentoring him to fulfill that promise.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Flacco made that point crystal clear.

“I got so many things to worry about,” Flacco said (h/t Pro Football Talk). “I’m trying to go out there and play good football. … I’m not worried about developing guys or any of that. That is what it is. I hope he does develop. I don’t look at that as my job. My job is to go win football games for this football team.”

Flacco isn’t the first starter to make this kind of statement. Some veterans are all too happy to take young quarterbacks under their wings. Others seem to bristle at the notion.

Thanks to the way things went down in Baltimore, Flacco enters the 2019 campaign with a significant chip on his shoulder. A former Super Bowl champ, he was ousted by rookie Lamar Jackson last season.

Now, he finds himself in a potentially similar situation. Because as much as the Broncos say Lock isn’t ready for the starting job yet, things will change if Flacco struggles and isn’t winning games.
