WATCH: Mariners break new HR record to start season

The Seattle Mariners entered the season with universally low expectations from across the league, now 15 games into the season they’ve just broken an MLB record that no one saw coming.

Second baseman Dee Gordon, who combined for just six home runs over the past two seasons, uncorked a solo home run to right field to give Seattle the new MLB record for a home run in 15 consecutive games to open up a season.

A night after outfielder Mitch Haniger drilled a go-ahead home run in the 9th inning to beat the Kansas City Royals and extend the team’s home run streak, Gordon came through on Thursday with the record-breaking home run.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Gordon’s solo shot pushed the Mariners past the Cleveland Indians season-opening mark of 14 consecutive games back in 2002.
