Chargers’ Keenan Allen takes a shot at Chiefs defensive backs

The Kansas City Chiefs made some strong moves this past offseason to shore up their defense, but Los Angeles Chargers receiver Keenan Allen isn’t impressed.

On Monday following the draft, Allen was at the podium taking questions from the media. One person asked him about Kansas City’s busy offseason. He responded by saying, “It was brought up today in the locker room. We just looked at their DB group and I’ll just leave it at that,” per Gilbert Manzano of the Orange County Register.

The Chargers and Chiefs are bitter rivals, and this comment reflects that.

Back to the original point about what Kansas City did this offseason, they were sure busy. The Chiefs added some pieces in free agency, made a blockbuster trade ahead of the draft, and then added a couple more defenders in the draft.

Adding safety Tyrann Mathieu should be a big move to improve the secondary Allen disparaged with his comment. Second-round safety Juan Thornhill out of Virginia could be a star in the making. And, of course, landing Clark in the trade with Seattle was a huge move we wrote makes the Chiefs Super Bowl favorites.

That being said, it’s hardly surprising that Allen isn’t worried. He has one of the game’s best quarterbacks on his side and had a huge game against the Chiefs last year. Both teams see themselves as championship contenders, too.

We can’t wait for the first Chiefs-Chargers battle this year, when Allen gets to back up his big talk. The first matchup comes in Week 11 when Kansas City comes to Los Angeles. Then later on, the two rivals close out the season with a battle at Arrowhead in Week 17.
