Report: Warriors have discussed signing Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Golden State Warriors will soon face what promises to be a franchise-altering summer. Stars Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson and DeMarcus Cousins are all set to hit free agency in July.

Specifically, there’s been a lot of talk about Durant leaving the two-time defending champs for the Big Apple.

If that were to come to fruition, Golden State’s brass is eyeing a prize that might be available during the summer of 2021 — Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

“I can promise you, furthermore, that the Warriors have internally mused about a run at Giannis — however futile it may prove to be — in the event they can’t convince Kevin Durant to re-sign this summer,” Marc Stein of The NY Times reported Wednesday. “Trying to sign the most attractive free agent available is on the first page of the Golden State owner Joe Lacob’s playbook.”

Star Stephen Curry is good friends with the Greek Freak. Meanwhile, the two are represented by the same agency. Based on what we saw during last weekend’s All-Star Game, Curry and Giannis would be a tremendous on-court fit.

With that said, this remains a pie in the sky thought. Giannis still has two more years remaining on his current deal and has his Bucks as a legit title contender. He’s an absolute star in Milwaukee and loves the city.

Furthermore, it still remains unlikely that Durant will bolt the Warriors for another team. If Golden State were to win a third consecutive title this coming June, Durant could very well return to surpass the success we’ve seen from the likes of Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant in the past. That’s to say, winning four consecutive titles.

Either way, this is a rather interesting development. The Warriors’ brass will continue to go after the big fish. And once the team relocates to the San Francisco waterfront next season, they’ll be an even more attractive destination.
