Report: Broncos will look to trade Case Keenum

The Denver Broncos and Baltimore Ravens have a trade in the works that will send Joe Flacco to Denver, ending Case Keenum’s tenure as the starter.

According to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic, John Elway spoke with Keenum on Wednesday morning about the move.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports the Broncos will now try and trade Keenum, who has $7 million guaranteed on his contract this coming season. If no deal can be struck, he’ll have to take a huge paycut or be released, per Rapoport. He also has a $10 million dead cap hit, so the Broncos will have to absorb that if he’s released.

Last year, Keenum completed 62.3 percent of his passes for 3,890 yards with 18 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, leading Denver to a 6-10 record.

As we detailed following the breaking news on the trade, replacing Keenum with Flacco is going to amount to yet another catastrophic mistake by Elway at this most critical position. If the Broncos end up eating Keenum’s contract on top of it, the mistake becomes even more glaring.
