OU’s Marquise Brown draft stock takes huge hit with combine measurements

Oklahoma Sooners product Marquise Brown (aka: Hollywood Brown) has been considered to be a fringe first-round pick this winter. After Thursday’s measurements at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine, all that talk has to be thrown out the window.

When Brown stepped up to be measured, he came in at 5-foot-9 3/8 and a ridiculously light 166 pounds. As a point of reference, Brown is pretty much the same size as return specialist De’Anthony Thomas of the Kansas City Chiefs.

What’s crazy is that Brown’s quarterback at Oklahoma last year, Kyler Murray — the guy everyone was freaking out about regarding size until Thursday — was both taller and much, much heavier.

What’s even worse for Brown is that he’s not able to participate on the field during the combine drills after undergoing surgery for a Lisfranc injury.

Can the young receiver fly? Sure. He routinely got past college cornerbacks for huge gains like this. However, there was already a big concern that Brown would struggle against NFL cornerbacks in press coverage due to a lack of strength. The combine measurements only furthered that notion.

Brown caught 132 passes for 2,413 yards and 17 touchdowns the past two years for the Sooners. That’s great production. But it’s impossible not to wonder if he’ll struggle at the next level due to his lack of size and strength.

At the least, Brown’s stock took a big hit. A first-round grade at this point seems way out of line. He’ll be a Day 2 pick, at best.
