Report: Jason Garrett fired Scott Linehan, not Jerry Jones

The big NFL news this Friday is that the Dallas Cowboys have officially fired offensive coordinator Scott Linehan. In the wake of that news, it’s being reported that head coach Jason Garrett — not owner Jerry Jones — made the decision, per Jean-Jacques Taylor of NBC Sports Fort Worth/Dallas.

Big picture: If this is true, then it’s big news because Jones has had an iron grip on the hiring and firing process throughout his tenure as owner.

  • It would mean that Garrett is gaining some power within the organization, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your perspective.
  • It puts the onus on Garrett to bring in a big-time hire and replace Linehan, or perhaps take over the offense himself.

Looking ahead: Jones has already hinted Garrett is going to land an extension, and the future of the franchise will more firmly rest upon his shoulders.
