Steve Kerr on DeMarcus Cousins: ‘Not close’ to returning

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The expectation for a while now has been that Golden State Warriors All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins would make his debut with the team some time after Christmas.

Cousins signed a one-year contract with the defending champs back in July. That came months after he suffered a torn Achilles as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans.

Knowing full well that they want Cousins back and healthy for the playoffs, the Warriors have played this situation close to the vest. That now includes Warriors head coach Steve Kerr noting that Cousins is “not close” to returning to the court.

This seems to be a clear indication that Golden State doesn’t have a timeline for Cousins return from the devastating injury he suffered almost a calendar year ago. The good news here is that he’s been taking part in practice down at the G-League.

By their standards, the Warriors have struggled to start the season. They head into Monday night’s game against the Grizzlies with a 20-10 record. But that’s not going to force Golden State into rushing Cousins back.
