George H.W. Bush’s funeral guest list uses Nolan Ryan to troll Rangers

The person who made the guest list for the Houston funeral of President George H.W. Bush has a sense of humor, at least as it relates to Nolan Ryan.

Ryan was one of the many well-known figures to attend the funeral of the 41st President of the United States. Per Matt Young of the Houston Chronicle, the guest list referred to the legendary pitcher as “Baseball Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan of the Houston Astros (and other lesser teams).”

This could be seen as a dig at Ryan’s first two teams, the New York Mets or Los Angeles Angels. But we’re pretty confident this is a joke between members of the Bush family.

While the late president was famous for his support of Houston teams, his son, George W. Bush, owned the Texas Rangers before becoming Governor of Texas and the President of the United States himself.

Ryan, of course, pitched for the Rangers at the end of his career and is in the Hall of Fame with a Rangers’ hat. His tenure with Texas (1989-1993) almost directly coincided with Bush’s ownership (1989-1994).

In all, this is a pretty solid zinger. Score one for the old man.
