Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is finding his seat scorching hot following the team’s latest defeat at the hands of the division-rival Minnesota Vikings on Sunday night.
In what has been a theme throughout the season, McCarthy’s in-game coaching came under scrutiny Sunday in Minneapolis. In fact, a number of fans were calling on the longtime head coach to be fired.
At 4-6-1 on the season, Green Bay is pretty much completely out of the NFC Playoff race. It will have to win out and get some help in order to play postseason football in January.
In talking about his team’s 24-17 loss, it seems that McCarthy is taking a ton of the blame.

“I understand why you’re asking the questions. That’s part of the deal,” McCarthy said following the loss. “We’re about winning football games. We didn’t do enough. I didn’t do enough. I need to coach better.
It’s also interesting that McCarthy went out of his way to defend Aaron Rodgers’ poor performance against the Vikings. By now, it’s well known that there’s a rift between the two. Going to bat for the quarterback could be a way of McCarthy signaling to Rodgers that he has the former MVP’s back.
Either way, the Packers are now in an unenviable position. The good news? Four of the team’s final five games come against losing teams. That includes a 2-9 Arizona Cardinals squad this coming weekend.
The bad news? Short of an unlikely winning streak to conclude the season, McCarthy might not be long for the job in Green Bay. Nothing he said after the Packers’ latest loss changes this.
