Bills stunningly release starting CB Phillip Gaines

The downtrodden Buffalo Bills are apparently looking to mix it up following a blowout loss against the Chicago Bears last week. Though, it’s not at the position most might think.

Instead, Buffalo announced on Tuesday that it has released starting cornerback Phillip Gaines.

To say this came out of left field would be an understatement. A third-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs back in 2014, Gaines had started six games prior to being released.

He recorded 30 tackles and two passes defended for a Bills defense that enters Week 10 yielding the third-fewest passing yards in the NFL. Gaines had committed four pass interference penalties in the past three games. That might have played a role in this decision.

Even then, it’s a curious move for the struggling team.
