It took less than an inning before Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez unleashed his massive power with a three-run shot in Game 1 against the New York Yankees.

In the bottom of the first inning, Martinez took a pitch down and inside from Yankees starting pitcher J.A. Happ and sent it over the green monster in left field to give Boston a 3-0 lead.

Boston signed the powerful slugger this offseason with the hopes he would provide massive production in the heart of its lineup. On Martinez’s first at-bat of the postseason, he gave them just that.

Staked to a 3-0 lead with Chris Sale in the mound at Fenway Park, Boston has to feel great about its huge start to the ALDS against its hated rival.
