Larry Fitzgerald’s father blasts Cardinals’ coaching staff

A longtime sportswriter, Larry Fitzgerald Sr. has never been afraid to voice his opinion regarding what’s happening in the football world.

That didn’t change after he watched his son, Larry Fitzgerald, and the Arizona Cardinals take a beating against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

Following the 27-17 loss, Fitz Sr. posted since-deleted tweets that absolutely blasted the Cardinals’ coaching staff.

“Are you kidding me, Mike McCoy (offensive coordinator),” Fitzgerald Sr. wrote (h/t ABC 15 in Arizona). “Larry Fitzgerald not even on the field? Vikings stuff Cardinals! At 1 yard line.”

Fitzgerald caught a grand total of five passes for 39 yards in the loss. Through six games, he has hauled in just 22 passes for 215 yards in six games. This comes off a three-year stretch in which the 35-year-old future Hall of Famer caught 325 combined passes for 3,394 yards.

The older Fitzgerald also didn’t spare first-year Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks in his criticism of the coaching staff.

“Tough to win in the NFL Steve Wilks appears to have put offense in questionable hands,” Fitzgerald Sr. wrote. “Larry Fitzgerald has never gone 6 games without a TD.”

That’s a shot at Wilks hiring McCoy to be his offensive coordinator. And in reality, it’s well warranted. Arizona ranks 31st in the NFL at 13.7 points per game and is dead last in total offense. It’s led to a 1-5 start to the season.

At some point, the coaches have to be blamed for what could be one of the worst offenses in NFL history. Fitzgerald Sr. agrees.
