John Mara wishes Odell Beckham Jr. was making headlines on field instead of with his mouth

Odell Beckham Jr. Giants

New York Giants co-owner John Mara spent some time speaking with local media on Tuesday morning, and he addressed enigmatic star Odell Beckham Jr.

Mara told reporters, “I wish he would create the headlines by his play on the field as opposed to what he says and what he does off the field,” per Dan Graziano of ESPN. “I think he needs to do a little more playing and a little less talking.”

The receiver has made more headlines for what he’s said off the field and for what he’s done on the sidelines recently than he has for anything done on the field. Most notably, an ESPN interview gave him a chance to unload on his team’s “heart” and its offense, and he wasn’t exactly supportive of Eli Manning, either.

Then on Sunday, Beckham Jr. walked into the locker room while the offense was still on the field, and he was also seen punching and head-butting a fan on the sideline.

The Giants are a mess right now, heading into Week 7 with a 1-5 record. The offense has been among the most toothless units in the entire league.

Beckham has made a big impact on the field a few times, but he hasn’t exactly been the dominant force he was before getting injured last season. So far in 2018, Beckham has caught 45 passes for 506 yards and one touchdown.

A lot of that can be contributed to the obvious decline of Eli Manning. But the simple truth of the matter is that we wouldn’t be talking about OBJ so much now if he hadn’t done so much talking first.
