Seahawks release longtime P Jon Ryan, per his request

The purge in the Pacific Northwest continues. Knowing full well that he was unlikely to make the team after suiting up for the Seattle Seahawks over the past 10 seasons, punter Jon Ryan requested his release from the team.

In a post on social media, Ryan announced that he has been granted his release while thanking both Seahawks fans and the organization for his decade with the squad.

Having already seen longtime fixtures such as Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett, Richard Sherman and Kam Chancellor jettisoned from Seattle during the offseason, this is the latest in a series of moves that will lead to a somewhat unrecognizable product in 2018.

Ryan, one of the best punters in the game over the past dozen seasons, was unlikely to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. Instead, youngster Michael Dickson was the odds-on favorite to win the job heading into Week 1.

Even at 36 years old, we fully expect Ryan to land a regular job at some point soon. He averaged north of 45 yards per punt last season and remains one of the best punters in the game.
