Report: Josh Donaldson won’t make intended rehab start

Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson was scheduled to make another rehab start on Wednesday. But, due to soreness in his calves and legs, that reportedly will not happen.

This comes less than 24 hours after what appeared to be a good day for Donaldson.

He made a rehab start on Tuesday, going 1-for-2. More importantly, he showed no signs of injury. Additionally, contending teams were reportedly interested in a possible trade for the former American League MVP.

The latest news almost certainly changes that.

Donaldson is a free agent at the end of the season. As such, he’s a pure rental. Additionally, in order to be on any team’s playoff roster, he has to be in the organization on September 1. Even if the injuries keeping him from Wednesday’s game are minor, there’s simply not enough time for Donaldson — who’s dealt with a number of injuries — to prove that he’s healthy.

The 2018 season has been a forgettable one for Donaldson. Injuries have limited him to only 36 games. In those games, he’s struggled, hitting .234/.333/.423 with five home runs.
