Panthers’ Matt Kalil undergoes knee surgery

Matt Kalil

The Carolina Panthers might very well be without starting left tackle Matt Kalil for the regular season opener against the Dallas Cowboys.

It was noted on Monday that Kalil was set to see the world-renowned Dr. James Andrews about his sore right knee.

Now comes this piece of information from the Panthers themselves indicating that Kalil did in fact undergo a procedure. It included a scope of the right knee. According to NFL Media, the veteran is out on a week-to-week basis.

This comes after starting right tackle Daryl Williams suffered a dislocated kneecap and torn MCL earlier in the summer.

Needless to say, it’s a less-than-ideal scenario for a quarterback in Cam Newton who has been among the most pressured in the NFL over the past several seasons.

While Kalil himself leaves a lot to be desired from a pass-protection standpoint, he offered experience the Panthers simply don’t have behind him on the depth chart.
