Report: Carmelo Anthony telling people he’ll sign with the Rockets

Carmelo Anthony

Once his contract buyout is complete with the Atlanta Hawks following Thursday’s trade, 10-time All-Star Carmelo Anthony will be free to sign with a team of his choosing.

For a while now, and leading up to the deal that sent him from Oklahoma City to Atlanta, reports have suggested that the Houston Rockets are a clear favorite to land Melo.

According to the venerable David Aldridge, Anthony has been telling people close to him that he will ultimately sign with the Rockets.

This makes sense on a couple fronts. Houston lost forwards Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute in free agency. There’s an obvious need for a starting small forward. Secondly, Anthony himself is best buds with recently re-signed Rockets star Chris Paul.

Anthony, 34, is coming off the worst performance of his career in his only season with the Thunder. Last season saw him average just 16.2 points while shooting at a 40 percent mark from the field.

A defensive liability, it’s not yet known how much Anthony will help Houston in its attempt to unseat Golden State out west. But it appears that he is indeed headed to the Rockets.
