Khalil Mack

The news surrounding Khalil Mack and his contract impasse with the Oakland Raiders continues to get bleaker as the days go by.

Recently, it was reported that there was no communication, no progress and no optimism about a contract extension getting done as Mack continues to hold out of training camp.

Then on Tuesday after spending time with the team in Napa, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported there is “no present offer from the Raiders to star pass-rusher Khalil Mack and there has been no contract talks with Mack’s camp since February.”

That’s about the worst possible news Raiders fans could have gotten on this front.

Mack is not only one of the best overall players the Raiders have on their roster, but he’s also one of the best players in the NFL today. The past three seasons he’s racked up 36.5 sacks and has become one of the truly elite pass rushers the league has to offer.

If he does not get an extension and chooses to show up for work this year, then Mack is due to make $13.8 million, which is fully guaranteed as his fifth-year option on his rookie deal.

Assuming no deal gets done, then Mack would be a free agent next year, and it’s likely he’d rake in a record contract for his position at that point in time.
