Jameis Winston is out of second and third chances, and one columnist is calling on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to immediately release the quarterback.

Tom Jones of the Tampa Bay Times writes that the pressure is now on the Glazer family, who own the franchise, to sever ties with Winston.

“If you don’t cut him now, what kind of message are you sending to fans? Here’s what you’re saying: that you tolerate this kind of garbage. That you’re willing to overlook disgusting behavior by a player as long as he can throw a football really well. That winning football games is more important than anything else.”

Recently suspended by the NFL for three games, Winston released an apology that wasn’t well-received. And when it was reported he received a reduced suspension as part of a settlement with the league, the NFL world hammered the league.

All this stems from a 2016 incident where an Uber driver alleged that Winston sexually assaulted her.

Winston, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2015, has served as the starting quarterback for the last three seasons. Moving on from him would be a dramatic football move, but there’s a sound moral reason.

The NFL failed to send an adequate message, electing not to suspend Winston six games when in clear violation of the personal conduct policy.

Now, the pressure is on the Glazers. They could show character is more important than a couple of wins — or very much not.
