Report: Yankees don’t believe Mets will trade Jacob deGrom to them

Mets ace Jacob deGrom

There has been some suggestions around the MLB water cooler that the New York Mets and New York Yankees could engage in a blockbuster trade that would send ace Mets starter Jacob deGrom to the Yanks.

Outside of the obvious issues with the Mets dealing a high-profile player like deGrom to a cross-city rival, it appears that the team is looking for a massive return. That includes top prospects Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar.

According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, it’s now increasingly unlikely that the two teams will even engage in trade talks surrounding the 29-year-old right hander.

“A Yankees person suggested there’s no chance the Mets would have ever trade them deGrom, while a Mets person said that they would indeed make a big trade with the Yankees, assuming the Yankees understand that they’d have to pay a premium, just like a division rival might,” Heyman reported.

It’s pretty obvious that trade talks themselves just aren’t on the horizon between these two teams. Heck, the two sides can’t even agree on the likelihood of a trade going down. That’s not a great initial step in conversations.

In many ways, it makes a ton of sense from a Mets perspective. Why deal such a talented starter to the evil empire when pretty much every other contending team will show interest in deGrom between now and the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline?

Having posted an 11-27 record since a 17-9 start to this season, the Mets are likely going to be big time sellers on the trade market.

Boasting a 1.55 ERA and 1.01 WHIP in 14 starts this season, deGrom has a total of four wins to show for it (more on that here).

Needless to say, his talents could be better used elsewhere. Whether that comes to fruition remains to be seen. But there’s now a very small chance that the starter will be wearing Yankee pinstripes anytime this season.
