Report: Saints first-round pick Marcus Davenport needs surgery on thumb

Saints pass rusher Marcus Davenport

New Orleans Saints rookie pass rusher Marcus Davenport reportedly needs minor surgery to repair damage to his thumb, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Thankfully, this isn’t considered a huge problem, as Rapoport notes Davenport is going to wait until after mandatory minicamp to undergo the surgery, and that he’s expected to be ready for training camp in July.

Still, we have to imagine that the brass in New Orleans were a bit worried for a minute. After all, the franchise gave up an arm and a leg to move up to No. 14 overall from No. 27 in order to acquire this pass rusher out of UTSA.

There’s a lot riding on Davenport to be as good as advertised for the Saints, who have an overall roster that many believe is championship caliber. Last year for the Roadrunners, he had 55 tackles, including 17.5 for a loss, and 8.5 sacks.
