Report: Pelicans could see Dwight Howard as cheaper replacement for DeMarcus Cousins

Dwight Howard practice Atlanta Hawks

Dwight Howard is reportedly set to become a free agent as the Brooklyn Nets, who recently acquired him, are said to be in the process of buying him out. One team that could be in on Howard is the New Orleans Pelicans.

Chris Mannix of Yahoo Sports tweeted on Thursday that, “Another team to watch in Dwight’s free agency: New Orleans. Pelicans have chased Howard before, and with uncertainty surrounding the future of Cousins, Howard could be a cheaper option.”

The idea that the Pelicans could be looking for a cheaper alternative to DeMarcus Cousins isn’t a new one, either.

Howard isn’t a guy who necessarily has been a gem in the locker room. That said, even at the age of 32, he’s still banging around pretty well in the post. This past year playing for the Charlotte Hornets, he averaged 16.6 points, 12.5 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game.

He’s not as dynamic on the offensive end of the court as Cousins has been over the course of his career. However, it’s worth noting that nobody knows what to expect when Cousins returns from the Achilles injury that ended his 2017-18 season, either.
