Now that the likes of Matt Ryan, Jimmy Garoppolo, Alex Smith and Kirk Cousins have inked lucrative long-term contracts this offseason, it certainly seems that former league MVP Aaron Rodgers wants to be paid.
The 34-year-old Green Bay Packers quarterback is currently playing under a five-year, $110 million contract that runs through the 2019 campaign. His average annual salary of $22 million ranks 10th among signal callers in the NFL. Needless to say, Rodgers is vastly underpaid.
According to Packers President Mark Murphy, that’s about to change soon. “He’s healthy. We hope to soon have a contract extension,” the front office executive said this week, via WTMJ in Wisconsin.
Despite his relatively advanced age, any new contract would likely be of the five-year variety. It would also give Rodgers a substantial raise over what he’s currently slated to make over the next two seasons.
Based on the five-year, $150 million extension a lesser quarterback in Matt Ryan signed earlier in the offseason, it’s obvious Rodgers would surpass that number. Pure conjecture here, but $175 million over five seasons makes sense. In turn, that would make Rodgers the highest-paid player in NFL history.
