Report: Dwane Casey a ‘primary target’ for Pistons

Dwane Casey

The Detroit Pistons are overhauling their leadership after moving on from Stan Van Gundy, and the franchise is eyeing former Toronto Raptors boss Dwane Casey as the replacement on the sideline.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the news, saying Casey will be a primary target of the coaching search.

Casey spent seven seasons with the Raptors, guiding them to five consecutive playoff appearances yet never past the Eastern Conference Finals.

Toronto won 59 games in 2017-18, but LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers swept the East’s No. 1 seed out of the postseason. It was the third straight year the Raptors lost to the Cavs in the playoffs, and that proved to be the final straw despite Casey earning Coach of the Year honors.

Still, when a coach with five 48-plus-win seasons in a row is available, it makes sense to pursue him. After all, Detroit hasn’t reached the mark since 2007-08.

Toronto had reason to part with Casey, but it’s sensible for the Pistons to chase him, too.
