Panthers’ Fozzy Whittaker tears ACL during OTAs, placed on injured reserve

The Carolina Panthers have already suffered a serious setback during their first week of organized team activities. The team announced on Thursday that veteran running back Fozzy Whittaker suffered a torn ACL during OTAs and has been placed on injured reserve.

Whittaker, 29, was passed up on the depth chart by then rookie Christian McCaffrey last season. Prior to that, he played a pretty big role as a third-down back for former MVP Cam Newton and Co. Back in 2016, the veteran back tallied nearly 500 yards and averaged north of five yards per touch.

For the Panthers, the impact of losing Whittaker is somewhat mitigated due to the signing of former Pro Bowl running back C.J. Anderson recently. Having lost Jonathan Stewart in free agency, Anderson will team up with McCaffrey to handle the bulk of Carolina’s running back duties this coming season. We can still expect Carolina to target a veteran back to handle third-down duties. It’s an underrated aspect of today’s NFL.
