Paul George: How the Thunder finish this season won’t impact free agency

Paul George

The Oklahoma City Thunder enter the final weekend of regular season action in the midst of a seven-team race for five playoff spots out west. It’s going to be a frantic final few days of the regular season for Oklahoma City and the rest of those contending for these spots.

For his part, Thunder forward Paul George is seemingly focused more on the task at hand than his pending free agent status. When asked if how Oklahoma City finishes the season will impact his decision this coming summer, George responded in the negative.

“I can see myself being here,” George said, via ESPN’s Royce Young. “I’ve been happy here, I’ve been happy with the organization, happy with my teammates. Our record is not what we want it to be, but I think I’ve enjoyed just learning and being around these guys. So my answer is still the same. I’m not going to let the playoffs or how we finish this season persuade or indicate where I’m going to this offseason. I’m going to put everything into this and again, I can definitely see myself being here.”

This falls in line with recent suggestions that George will in fact re-sign with Oklahoma City. Though, the All-NBA performer has also been repeatedly linked to his hometown Los Angeles Lakers. They have the necessary cash to add two max-contract players in free agency.

Boasting a 45-34 record on the season, OKC has lost four of its past five games. The team is just one game ahead of Minnesota and Denver for the final playoff spot out west. George and Co. close up the regular season with a three-game set against Houston, Miami and Memphis.
