Doug Williams on Derrius Guice: ‘Got to applaud the kid’ for overcoming adversity

One of the biggest stories of the 2018 NFL Draft was how LSU running back Derrius Guice slid out of Round 1 and all the way down to No. 59 overall to the Washington Redskins.

Ahead of the draft, reports emerged detailing how teams were concerned about his maturity, and one report indicated he got into a verbal altercation with the Philadelphia Eagles during a meeting.

Despite all that, Washington’s Senior Vice President of Player Personnel, Doug Williams, expects nothing but the best from this young man, and he opened up about the pick in an appearance with SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday.

Williams noted that Guice grew up in the same area he did, saying “I know more about him than a lot of folks have known about him. And when you think about this kid, from where he comes from, and to be in the position that he’s in, you got to applaud the kid.”

“For this kid, who doesn’t drink, doesn’t smoke, hasn’t been arrested, no failed drug tests,” Williams said. “He’s a happy-go-lucky kid.”

On talent alone, Guice was a first-round prospect. So, if he proves to be a stand-up kid and stays out of trouble, Washington landed a huge steal late in Round 2.
