The Indianapolis Colts already pulled off a highway robbery by adding three second-round picks in a trade with the New York Jets that saw Indy move down from the third pick to sixth overall.
Could another possible trade down be in the cards here? According to general manager Chris Ballard, it’s a real possibility.

“We feel good about the player that’s going to be there. When we made the trade we thought a lot about the depth of the draft. If there’s two quarterbacks that go in the top six picks, are we going to feel comfortable with the fourth-best position player? And we do, we feel very comfortable with that,” Ballard told NFL Network on Friday. “But saying that, we will be open to moving back if it’s the right thing for us to do and there’s enough players on the board – depending on how far we have to move back – that we feel comfortable taking.”
It’s pretty much going to depend on how the first five picks play out. If the Cleveland Browns or Denver Broncos (selecting fourth and fifth respectively) decide to trade down with a quarterback-needy team, Indianapolis would be in prime position to land a top-end non-quarterback talent. That’s magnified if two of the first three picks or all of the first three picks are quarterbacks.
On the other hand, Indianapolis could be in an enviable position should one of the top-flight signal callers slip to No. 6 overall. That list includes Josh Rosen, Sam Darnold, Josh Allen and Baker Mayfield.
With the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and Arizona Cardinals all looking to move into the top 10 for a quarterback, Indianapolis could repeat the heist it created in the Jets trade earlier this offseason.
It’s definitely something to keep an eye on now that we’re less than a week away from the 2018 NFL Draft in Dallas.
