Steelers GM: Ben Roethlisberger could get contract extension this offseason

Ben Roethlisberger

Amid talk that Ben Roethlisberger could retire after the 2018 NFL season, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert isn’t ruling out a contract extension for the veteran quarterback, as noted by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Big Ben does still have two years left on his current contract. He has a base salary of $12 million the next two seasons, and a cap hit of $23.2 million in both 2018 and 2019.

This extension would likely be more about clearing some cap space for Pittsburgh than anything else. Even having made some big-time moves to clear cap space this offseason, the Steelers are just over a million under the cap right now, per Spotrac.

And with the Le’Veon Bell contract situation still looming, Colbert needs to do everything in his power to make room for his star running back. On that note, Colbert did say the negotiations with Bell are being placed on hold while the team navigates the draft and free agency. But that doesn’t mean it’s not still a top priority going forward, and Colbert did say he doesn’t believe the team will rescind the franchise tag.

Roethlisberger is about to enter his 15th NFL season at the age of 36. He’s currently No. 9 on the all-time touchdown passes list with 329 and is still one of the top passers in the NFL.
