The Dallas Cowboys had hoped to reach a long-term deal with pass rusher DeMarcus Lawrence before the March 6 franchise deadline. That reportedly will not happen.
As such, the team is expected to use its franchise tag on the star defensive end.

This goes in line with Dallas’ recent plans in regards to Lawrence. So, there’s nothing really shocking here. Lawrence was repeatedly seeking upwards of $17 million a year, which is roughly what he’ll make under the franchise tag.
Lawrence had a monster year in 2017. He recorded 14.5 sacks, which easily exceeded his total from his first three NFL seasons combined. Given that and some other past issues, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Lawrence play 2018 under the franchise tag.
The two sides will have until July 16 to reach a long-term agreement.
