Report: Broncos, Patriots have engaged in Aqib Talib trade discussions

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos are likely to move five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Aqib Talib at some point here soon. A previous report had suggested that Denver engaged in trade discussions with the San Francisco 49ers involving Talib. Though, the corner’s preference is to be released, ultimately to sign with his former New England Patriots squad.

Now, according to Mike Klis of 9 News in Denver, the Broncos and Patriots have also had trade talks surrounding the veteran defensive back.

“The Broncos are actively shopping Talib,” Klis reported. “New England is one of several teams the Broncos have engaged in Talib trade talks. Although the Broncos hope to deal Talib by the start of free agency next Wednesday, there is no rush to move him because none of his remaining contract is guaranteed until 53-man rosters are set on Sept. 1.”

While Klis notes that there’s no rush to trade Talib from a Broncos perspective, that’s not 100 percent accurate. He’s currently taking up a $12 million cap number for a squad that’s just $23 million under the cap. With Denver linked to high-profile free agent quarterbacks Case Keenum and Kirk Cousins, that $12 million would come in handy at the start of free agency this coming Wednesday.

For his part, Talib doesn’t really have a say in where he is traded. What would his reaction be if San Francisco and Denver pulled off a trade? It’s highly unlikely the veteran would decline a move to the 49ers.

On the other hand, New England is a natural fit. It will lose Malcom Butler in free agency, and definitely has a need at cornerback.

Talib, 32, played part of the 2012 campaign and the entire 2013 season with New England. Obviously, there’s a connection on that front.
