NFL could vote on targeting rule Tuesday

The NFL Competition Committee is meeting this week to potentially change some of the league’s rules heading into the 2018 season.

Among the rule changes that have been bandied about, this report notes that the committee could very well vote on a college-like targeting rule.

We’re not 100 percent sure what the language would look like here. If similar to the college rule, it would lead to an automatic ejection and potential suspension for a player that officials deem targeted an opponent. The rule itself has been a major point of contention around the college football world. Seeing it utilized in the NFL would bring that to a whole new level.

Far too often in college, we see a player penalized for making what most would consider a football play. Considering how the public deems officials at the NFL level, this might not be the best of ideas. Though, the thought process includes making the game safer. In a vacuum, that’s obviously not a bad thing.
