Jordy Nelson: ‘Not fun’ to tell Aaron Rodgers about being cut

Jordy Nelson and Aaron Rodgers developed a remarkable connection with the Green Bay Packers, but the team’s decision to release the receiver has ended their on-field relationship.

During an interview with ESPN Wisconsin, Nelson described the difficult phone call telling Rodgers he’d been cut.

“Not fun. I mean, I think both of us wanted to end our careers, and he always gave me a hard time the year I tore my ACL that I owed him an extra year, ’cause I missed one with him. So I told him after he broke his collarbone that he owed me an extra year now.”

The duo spent 10 years together, winning five NFC North division titles while torching defenses with regularity. During Super Bowl XLV, Nelson caught the first touchdown Rodgers threw in his MVP-winning game.

And from 2011-2016, Nelson tallied four 1,200-yard seasons and caught at least 13 touchdowns in three of those years. They showed off a unique ability to connect on back-shoulder throws, as well as when Rodgers would scramble to buy time.

Nelson caught 550 passes for 7,848 yards and 69 touchdowns as a member of the Packers, but Rodgers won’t see that familiar face on the field in 2018.
