Mark Cuban blames tanking comments on ‘being starstruck with Dr. J’

Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban openly admitted telling his team, the Dallas Mavericks, that the best course of action for the rest of the season is to tank for losses and improve draft lottery odds.

He made that admission during an appearance with Julius Irving, who he is now using as means to explain his faux pas. He exchanged text messages with Mike Doocy of Fox 4 in Dallas Fort Worth, during which he wrote, “I’m sure I will get fined for it. But I think it was more about being starstruck with Dr. J.”

That’s pretty weak. Pretty, pretty weak.

It’s probably a given that Cuban will receive a call from the league office, along with a piece of mail that features a pretty nice sum of money to be donated to the league’s charities. Everyone knows that bad teams tank, but you’re absolutely not supposed to admit you’re doing it, let alone that you told your players that’s the plan.

Oh well. Cuban has stuck his foot in his mouth before, and he’s not about to stop now. Just leave Dr. J out of it next time, okay?
