Gregg Popovich will ‘be surprised’ if Kawhi Leonard plays this season

San Antonio Spurs small forward Kawhi Leonard (2) is interviewed during media day at the Spurs training facility.

Based on what Gregg Popovich said on Wednesday, it’s going to take a minor miracle for the San Antonio Spurs to see Kawhi Leonard play this season.

Leonard missed the start of the season with a quad injury, and he’s appeared in just nine games since then. It’s an injury that has reportedly led to some contention between the star forward and his team, too.

When healthy, Leonard is a top-3 player in the NBA. He averaged 25.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals per game in 2016-17 and is one of the most dominant perimeter defenders in the Association. If he does indeed miss the entire season and postseason, Spurs fans should temper their playoff expectations.
