The defending champion Golden State Warriors currently boast NBA’s best record at 40-10 on the season. They’re odds-on favorites to win a third title in four seasons. They’re in the midst of what could ultimately be the best NBA dynasty since Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls.
In no way does this mean that Golden State is content with its current roster. Here’s a team that signed former MVP Kevin Durant mere weeks after finishing up 73-9 season. The front office is always proactive.
Now comes this report indicating that the Warriors will indeed chase hard after New Orleans Pelicans big man Anthony Davis during the summer.
“Boston, most prominently, but also Golden State, San Antonio and Chicago — will go into this trade deadline not only with their own rosters in mind, but with some consideration for the potential of a Davis trade this summer,” Sean Deveney of the Sporting News reported Tuesday.
Of that group, Boston has the most assets to potentially trade for Davis. That includes youngsters Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.
Though, the Warriors themselves come in a close second. Despite the team’s loaded roster, Golden State boasts its first-round picks in 2018 and 2019. It also has two youngsters who are widely hailed as starter-caliber players in the form of Patrick McCaw and Jordan Bell. Add in the possibility that the team could include a top-five all-around player in Klay Thompson, and a trade doesn’t seem too unrealistic.
Then again, this is all under the assumption that New Orleans will actually place Davis on the trade block. GM Dell Demps has turned down trade proposals in the past and has seemingly marked Davis as untouchable. That could very well change, especially if Demps himself is fired this summer. And as we saw with the Blake Griffin trade on Monday, the shocking seems to make its way to the NBA.
The larger issue for a potential Davis to Golden State trade is the NBA. Would Commissioner Adam Silver pull a David Stern and nix the trade? That’s an entirely different question in and of itself.
