John Elway takes blame for Broncos’ struggles

The Denver Broncos seriously considered firing head coach Vance Joseph after just one season. If that were to have come to fruition, general manager John Elway would have been on the receiving end of a lot of criticism.

Sure the Broncos finished up this past regular season with a 5-11 record and in last place in the AFC West. But Elway didn’t put his team in the best situation to succeed, especially at the quarterback position.

At the very least, it now looks like Elway is taking the blame for the Broncos’ first last-place finish since 2010.

Those are some strong words from the executive. And he’s not anywhere near wrong. Bungling the most-important position on the football field, Elway forced Joseph to have to rely on Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler under center. The three combined to throw 19 touchdowns compared to 22 interceptions. None of that is really on Joseph. He simply can’t get water from a rock.

If Elway is indeed serious about looking in the mirror here, that could bode well for the Broncos’ hopes of actually upgrading at quarterback in the offseason.
