Buffalo Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor

Based on comments made by Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane, it’s safe to say Tyrod Taylor isn’t the quarterback of the future in Western New York.

Though Beane refused to divulge specific information about what his plans are going forward, he made it clear the team still hasn’t found its franchise passer, which bodes ill for Taylor’s future with the Bills.

Beane appeared on on WGR 550 and said teams making the playoffs from year to year all have one common trait — they have franchise quarterbacks. He also said the Bills are “still in the process of getting that accomplished.”

The general manager also said he’s taken a look at each of the top quarterbacks in the draft and that any decision to spend a top pick on a passer would ultimately come down to him.

“It’ll be a collaborative deal, [but] at the end of the day, it’ll be my decision to make,” Beane said. “Sean and I will talk things out, and we talk out a lot of things. Everyday stuff here, things that happen in the week, in the games, and we talk about those decisions and plan them out. We will go through a lot of those scenarios leading up into the draft, but you do have to have one final voice to make that call. I’ll do that, but everything will be a collaborative [effort]. Sean will be very involved in the process.”

Obviously, the Bills aren’t satisfied with Taylor. All we have to do to acknowledge this is look back at Sean McDermott’s decision to bench Taylor in favor of fifth-round rookie Nathan Peterman earlier this year — an unmitigated disaster, no less — to see the writing on the wall here. It didn’t help Taylor’s cause that he was really off his game in the Wild Card Game against Jacksonville.

If the Bills still have Taylor on the roster at the start of the next league year in March, then he’ll be owed a $6 million roster bonus. That’s not happening. The only way Taylor will be on the roster next year is if he re-works his deal to take less. But he already did that before this past season, and we’d be shocked if it happened again.
