Report: Tennessee fires AD John Currie

John Currie

Tennessee has focused its disastrous coaching search on Mike Leach, but now the school is looking for an athletic director.

According to Chynna Green of local station WVLT, John Currie has been fired after spending just eights months in the role.

This doesn’t come as a surprise.

Tennessee fired Butch Jones in the midst of a 4-8 campaign, and the school seemed to take longer than necessary for that to happen. Most expected the dismissal following a 41-0 disaster against Georgia, but Jones stuck around for five more games and four more losses.

Perhaps even worse, the school seemed entirely unprepared for the official coaching search. Despite having an entire month to quietly communicate — it’s naive to think that’s not happening — behind the scenes, Tennessee has bounced from candidate to candidate over the last couple of weeks.

ESPN analyst Jon Gruden was always a dream, but the Vols swung and missed on Ohio State’s Greg Schiano, Oklahoma State’s Mike Gundy, Mississippi State’s Dan Mullen, Duke’s David Cutcliffe, Purdue’s Jeff Brohm, NC State’s Dave Doeren and SMU’s Chad Morris.

To have so much time yet fail so emphatically is not only an embarrassment for Tennessee, it’s a reflection of ineffective leadership.

If the last thing Currie did at Tennessee was bring in Leach, he leaves on a commendable decision. The problem is how long he needed to get there.
