Report: Josh McDaniels among favorites to land Giants job

Josh McDaniels rule

The rumor mill will continue to heat up surrounding the New York Giants’ vacant head coaching job, especially now that Dave Gettleman has been hired as the team’s general manager.

Reports earlier on Sunday indicated that Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz is favored to land the job. In fact, an interview could be on the horizon here soon.

Though, according to the venerable Gary Myers of the New York Daily News, said reports seem to be premature. Myers also notes that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia are favorites along with Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien (should he be fired) to land the Giants’ job.

The interesting dynamic here is that Gettleman will reportedly run the Giants’ free agency and draft efforts. It’s a change of landscape for a Giants organization that had in the past relied on both former GM Jerry Reese and VP of Player Evaluation Marc Ross to run the draft room.

It seems to be obvious that the Giants are looking for experience at head coach. Sure Patricia doesn’t fit that mold, but he’s been bandied about as a potential candidate around the NFL for years now. O’Brien, McDaniels and Schwartz all have previous head coaching experience at this level.
