Michigan players, coach to dye hair in Outback Bowl for great cause

Michigan defensive end Chase Winovich promised to dye his hair orange for the Outback Bowl if fans could meet a challenge of raising $15,000 for The ChadTough Foundation.

After just 13 hours, contributions surpassed that mark. But that was simply the start of something special.

Since then, offensive lineman Grant Newsome, defensive tackle Maurice Hurst, linebacker Devin Bush and defensive back Josh Metellus all pledged to dye their hair once the crowdfunding effort reached certain benchmarks. Honorary teammate Larry Prout Jr. did, too.

To cap it off, defensive coordinator Don Brown — often recognized by his mustache — said he’d dye his facial hair once the campaign reached $125,000.

The Winovich-organized fundraiser is now above $150,000, more than 10 times the player’s initial goal. All donations will go toward research of Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), which affected Chad Carr — the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr.

Michigan is known for its maize and blue color palette, but a little bit of orange will be an appreciated sight when the Wolverines take on South Carolina in the Outback Bowl.
