Seahawks to place DE Cliff Avril on injured reserve

Cliff Avril

The Seattle Seahawks will place defensive end Cliff Avril on injured reserve with a neck injury, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

“Cliff Avril will go on IR. He’s seeing a bunch of doctors, seriously looking at a big decision,” Carroll said Wednesday, via SiriusXM Radio.

Big picture here includes Avril considering retirement. That was followed up a report indicating that the injury could be career-ending.

In no way is any of this a surprise. Whenever we’re talking about a neck injury, the primary concern has to be a player’s health off the field. In this regard, Avril is smart in deciding to see a bunch of doctors and looking at the bigger picture.

Avril, a 10-year veteran from Purdue, put up 33.5 sacks in his first four seasons with the Seahawks. He’s also coming off his first career Pro Bowl performance last season.
