Following a somewhat solid NFL debut Monday night against the Minnesota Vikings, Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Mitchell Trubisky will likely remain under center for the long term.
If that’s the case, we have to start getting accustomed to a random nickname that has now followed him from his college days at North Carolina.
“Biscuit.”
Really. Just ask Bears guard Kyle Long, who used this name to throw praise Trubisky’s way on Monday night.

We dug a little to figure out what the heck this actually meant. And for his part, Trubisky was the one to answer what led this one scribe on an exploration for the past several minutes.
“Freshman year of college, one of my coaches was out with family friends or whatever,” Trubisky said back in April, via the Chicago Tribune. “Somebody said my name and kind of stuttered it or mumbled it. He was like, ‘What’d you say? Mr. Biscuit?’ instead of Mitchell Trubisky. It kind of stuck that week of practice, and that’s what all the boys started calling me.”
That’s somewhat unfortunate. Maybe, it’s their way to shorten Seabiscuit by referring to Trubisky as a thoroughbred. Maybe, someone somewhere wants to “sop him up with a biscuit,” because he’s so darn adorable.
In any event, we’re probably going to have to get used to Trubisky’s teammates calling him this publicly. Long is a trendsetter in the Bears’ locker room. And his unfortunate revealing of Mitchell’s nickname is something all of us will have to deal with now.
