Jake Allen on Florida firing Jim McElwain: ‘We have to find out through Twitter?!!’

Florida is reportedly firing head football coach Jim McElwain one day after the Gators were blown out by Georgia, 42-7, per Doug Samuels of Football Scoop. And while it was reported the team had informed players of the move, quarterback Jake Allen begs to differ.

So also does Luke Del Rio.

That McElwain is reportedly gone isn’t surprising at all, as Florida is in the middle of a frustrating 3-4 season, has lost three in a row and has been downright awful offensively the past two-plus seasons since McElwain took over. Furthermore, McElwain came out recently and said he, his family, players and coaches have all received death threats — a claim he never did substantiate when asked to do so.

This led to a report that came out during Saturday’s game, which alleged that Florida was looking into whether it had cause to fire McElwain. This report also indicated the university was looking into whether it had to pay him the $12.9 million he’s due if it did have cause (more on that here).

In this day and age, it’s not uncommon for players to find out their coach has been fired. Things move too fast on social media sometimes to avoid this unfortunate truth.
