Giants’ Brandon Marshall wants to play next season

Brandon Marshall

New York Giants wide receiver Brandon Marshall will be 34 by the time the 2018 season comes calling. He’s currently rehabbing from an ankle injury that will cost him the remainder of this season.

If that weren’t enough to think Marshall might be looking to hang them up, he recorded just 18 catches for 154 yards in five games before suffering the ankle injury last week.

Certainly on the downside of his career, Marshall apparently isn’t ready to retire.

“I’m a competitor, and I don’t want to go out like that,” Marshall said, via ESPN. “I’m definitely not going out like that.”

There’s definitely something to a player of Marshall’s ilk not wanting to retire while on injured reserve. He’s a six-time Pro Bowler and one of the most-accomplished receivers of this era.

Unfortunately, teams will not be taking that into account should the Giants decide to release Marshall. He signed a two-year, $11 million contract this past spring after struggling through a 2016 campaign with the New York Jets. The Giants could save $5.5 million against next year’s cap by releasing Marshall.

Interest in his services will likely be muted on the open market, at which point Marshall might not have any other option but to call it quits.
